Bailundo, Huambo now hosts a solar power plant with a capacity of 7.992 MWdc that has been inaugurated

The Solar Energy Center in Bailundo, Huambo province, will bring benefits to more than 51,023 residents. Today, December 12, the Minister of Energy and Water’s visit program includes a comprehensive schedule covering Bailundo, Ecunha, and Huambo municipalities.

On Tuesday, December 12, the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Photovoltaic Solar Center was held in Bailundo. This center, with a production capacity of 7,992 MWdc, is part of the Angola 2025 Plan established by the government to enhance electrification rates using eco-friendly energy sources, aiding households and businesses in transitioning from costly and irregular fossil fuel energy to more affordable and cleaner alternatives.

The ceremony was overseen by the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, in the presence of Provincial Governor Notti Nolika and Bailundo’s King, Chiongolola Chongonga, along with senior officials from MINEA, the energy sector, DNEER, PRODEL, ENDE, and local government. The Consignment Deed was signed by representatives from PRODEL and MCA on behalf of the Angolan government.

During the event, the minister emphasized the significance of this milestone and highlighted President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço’s objectives to provide cleaner and more affordable energy for Angolan families. The aim is to achieve approximately 70% renewable energy in the national energy matrix by 2027, thereby enhancing citizens’ quality of life.

The project, with a budget of EUR 20,271,445.00, is slated for completion in 2023. It will involve the installation of 15,600 panels and is expected to create 50 direct jobs. Following the ceremony, the minister and his delegation conducted an evaluation visit to the project site before proceeding to Ecunha Municipality to assess the progress of electrification efforts.
