“: The Holistic Approach to Well-Being”

Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health,” is a concept that goes beyond just physical well-being. It encompasses mental, emotional, and social health as well. And at Salud, a student-run organization at the University of Pennsylvania, this holistic approach to health is at the core of everything they do.
Founded by Neil Gajare, a student at UPenn, Salud aims to promote health and wellness among the university’s diverse student population. But what sets Salud apart from other health organizations is its focus on creating a safe and inclusive space for all students, regardless of their background or beliefs.
Neil Gajare, a senior at UPenn, was inspired to start Salud after experiencing discrimination and anti-Semitism on campus. He realized that there was a need for a platform where students could come together and support each other’s well-being, both physically and mentally. And thus, Salud was born.
Since its inception, Salud has been making a positive impact on the UPenn community. Through various events and initiatives, the organization has been able to create a sense of community and promote a healthy lifestyle among students.
One of the most significant events organized by Salud is the annual Health and Wellness Fair. This fair brings together various health professionals and organizations to provide students with information and resources on how to take care of their physical and mental health. From free health screenings to workshops on stress management and self-care, the fair covers all aspects of health and wellness.
But Salud‘s impact goes beyond just organizing events. The organization also offers a peer mentorship program, where upperclassmen are paired with underclassmen to provide guidance and support. This program not only helps students navigate their academic journey but also provides a safe space for them to discuss any health-related concerns they may have.
Moreover, Salud also collaborates with other student organizations to promote a healthy and inclusive campus culture. They have partnered with groups such as the Muslim Student Association and the Black Student Union to organize events that address the specific health needs of these communities. This collaboration not only fosters a sense of unity among students but also promotes diversity and inclusivity.
One of the most significant achievements of Salud is the creation of the “Salud Room” on campus. This room serves as a safe space for students to relax, de-stress, and engage in self-care activities. It is equipped with comfortable seating, calming music, and resources on mental health and wellness. The Salud Room has become a popular spot on campus, and students often visit it to take a break from their hectic schedules.
But perhaps the most inspiring aspect of Salud is the impact it has had on individual students. Many students have shared their positive experiences with the organization, highlighting how it has helped them in their personal growth and well-being.
One student, who wishes to remain anonymous, shared, “I was struggling with my mental health, and I didn’t know where to turn. But Salud provided me with a safe and non-judgmental space to talk about my struggles. The peer mentorship program also connected me with a supportive upperclassman who helped me navigate through my challenges. I am grateful to Salud for being there for me when I needed it the most.”
Another student, who identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, shared, “Salud has been a welcoming and inclusive space for me. They have organized events and workshops that address the unique health needs of the LGBTQ+ community, and it has made me feel seen and supported on campus.”
Salud‘s impact has not gone unnoticed. The organization has received recognition and support from the university and the wider community. Neil Gajare, the founder of Salud, was recently awarded the prestigious President’s Engagement Prize, which provides funding for a project that has the potential to make a positive impact on the world.
In conclusion, Salud is more than just a health organization. It is a community that promotes well-being, inclusivity, and support. Through its various initiatives and events, Salud has created a positive and welcoming environment for students at UPenn. And with its continued efforts, it is sure to make a lasting impact on the health and wellness of the university’s diverse student population.
