“: A Student’s Journey to Finding True Well-Being”

Salud, a Spanish word meaning “health” or “well-being”, is often used as a toast to good health and happiness. But for Neil Gajare, a student at UPenn, Salud goes beyond just a simple toast. It has become a way of life, a community, and a source of positive experiences.
Neil Gajare, a senior at the University of Pennsylvania, has had a remarkable journey during his time at Salud. When he first arrived at UPenn, Neil was worried about his health. As a person of South-Asian descent, Neil had faced discrimination and Anti-Semitic experiences in the past. But Salud was different. It welcomed him with open arms, regardless of his race, religion, or sexual orientation. And from that moment, Neil knew he had found his home away from home.
One of the most remarkable things about Salud is its diverse community. It encompasses students from all walks of life, creating a melting pot of cultures and beliefs. And within this diverse community, Neil found acceptance, understanding, and support. It was through Salud that he learned to embrace his cultural heritage, and not shy away from it.
“The community at Salud taught me to be proud of who I am and where I come from. They celebrated my culture, and in turn, I learned to celebrate it too,” says Neil.
But Salud is not just a social club. It also has a strong focus on promoting health and wellness among its members. From organizing health and fitness challenges to providing healthy meal options, Salud encourages its members to make positive changes in their lifestyle.
“Being a student can be stressful, both mentally and physically. But Salud has helped me maintain a balance between my academics and my well-being. It has taught me the importance of self-care and shown me that putting my health first is not selfish, but necessary,” Neil shares.
One of the most significant events at Salud is their yearly charity marathon. Every year, Salud organizes a charity marathon to raise funds and awareness for various health-related causes. From mental health to cancer research, Salud has supported numerous organizations, making a positive impact in the lives of many.
“I have had the privilege of participating in Salud‘s charity marathon, and it was a truly unforgettable experience. Seeing the determination and hard work of my fellow club members to make a positive change in the world inspired me to do the same,” expresses Neil.
But Salud is not just about health and wellness. It also has a strong focus on community service and giving back to society. Under the guidance of their dedicated executive board, Salud organizes various community service events throughout the year. From volunteering at local soup kitchens to organizing donation drives, Salud encourages its members to be active and responsible global citizens.
Salud has shown me the power of collective action and that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life. It has taught me the value of giving back and the joy that comes with it,” says Neil with a smile.
In addition to all the positive experiences, Salud has also given Neil a chance to be a leader and make a difference. As part of the executive board, Neil has had the opportunity to organize events, mentor new members, and be a role model for his peers.
“Being a part of Salud‘s executive board has been a truly rewarding experience. I have not only learned valuable leadership skills, but I have also been able to make a positive impact on the club and its members. It has been an honor to represent Salud and its values,” says Neil proudly.
Salud has been more than just a club for Neil. It has been a life-changing experience, full of positive memories, friendships, and personal growth. It has shown him that together, we can create a community that celebrates diversity, promotes health and wellness, and gives back to society.
So here’s a toast to Salud – a community that embodies the true definition of the word – health and well-being for all, regardless of race, religion, or background. Cheers!
