Chicago doctors share their number one advice for attending holiday parties

As Christmas approaches, it’s time to start planning for festive markets, dazzling lights displays, and of course, holiday parties. But as the cold weather sets in and respiratory illnesses rise, it’s important to take steps to stay safe and healthy.

Doctors are recommending that everyone get updated vaccines for the flu, COVID-19, and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus). It’s not too late to get vaccinated, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone over 5 years of age get the updated COVID-19 vaccine at least two months after receiving their first dose. People with weakened immune systems should talk to their healthcare provider about additional doses.

The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone over 6 years of age, and certain options are advised for those 65 and older. It’s also safe to get the flu and COVID vaccines at the same time.

Multiple COVID variants have been circulating in recent weeks, with the colder weather likely contributing to the rise. Vaccines are our best defense against these variants, and getting the updated booster is recommended as protection may only last around six months.

RSV rates have also been increasing, especially in younger children who are more at risk. While there is a vaccine for those over 60 years old, Illinois Department of Public Health officials are concerned about pediatric intensive care unit capacity.

So what else can you do to stay safe this holiday season? Doctors recommend that hosts provide proper indoor ventilation, encourage good hand hygiene, and remind guests to cover their coughs and sneezes. If you’re feeling under the weather, avoid large gatherings and wear a mask to protect yourself and others.

No matter what holiday festivities you plan to attend, getting updated vaccines and taking safety precautions are the best ways to stay safe and enjoy the season.
