As respiratory illnesses continue to rise in the country and state, Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has issued guidelines to help prevent further spread of the virus. Masks should be worn in certain areas of healthcare facilities and other precautionary measures should be taken.
The new guidance was issued on Friday as a response to the recent rise in cases of respiratory viruses such as COVID-19, flu, and RSV. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the week ending November 25th saw a total of 1,039 hospitalizations in Illinois, which is a 20% increase from the previous week.
In order to combat the growing numbers, IDPH is encouraging the use of masks in patient care areas, especially for those with weakened immune systems. The CDC also recommends using Universal Masking, which is a facility-wide policy of wearing masks, during periods of higher levels of COVID-19.
However, it is important to understand that masks and other preventative measures are not enough. Dr. Sameer Vohra, the IDPH Director, urged residents to take steps to protect their families. These include wearing masks in crowded places, practicing good hand hygiene, and getting the COVID, flu, and RSV vaccines, if eligible.
Vohra also asked parents and caregivers to protect their young children, especially due to the limited pediatric ICU capacity in many areas of the state. It is important to stay informed of the latest updates and follow safety precautions as prescribed by the respective health departments.
It is also essential to adhere to social distancing guidelines and maintain proper hygiene. Frequently washing your hands and using hand sanitizer is recommended, along with avoiding contact with people who are sick. Furthermore, people should not share personal items such as cups, dishes, utensils, and even towels.
The respiratory illnesses are a serious threat and the only way to prevent them is by taking the necessary precautions. Everyone should do their part to stay safe and protect their families from the virus. By following the guidelines issued by the IDPH, as well as the CDC, people can help keep the virus from spreading further.
