Apart from the cultivation structure, Cobre Panama provided a storage facility for supplies, materials, and tools, an irrigation system, and cucumber seeds that will play a fundamental role in the start of educational activities in this greenhouse.
Cobre Panama has donated a 230m2 cultivation house to the University of Panama.
This generous donation will allow students to create a controlled microclimate environment with the aim of cultivating healthier fruits and vegetables.
The initiative is part of Cobre Panama’s efforts to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural production alternatives in communities near the mine. The company made this donation to the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Regional University Center of Coclé, University of Panama.
The cultivation house, also known as a tropicalized greenhouse, will provide students with an invaluable opportunity to gain practical experience and develop skills in cultivating healthy foods in a controlled environment.
Fulgencio Álvarez, director of the Coclé University Center, expressed gratitude to the mining company for its valuable contribution to strengthening the Forestry Engineering career. According to Álvarez, the donation of this cultivation house will provide students with the opportunity to become familiar with a technology that is constantly growing worldwide, aiming to produce food sustainably in limited and environmentally respectful spaces.
Thanks to this donation, around 100 students from the Agricultural Sciences and Forestry Engineering careers will learn about the benefits of enclosed spaces, which allow farmers to create microclimates by controlling temperature, environmental factors, and humidity. This will enable them to obtain out-of-season harvests, reduce water consumption through an automated irrigation system, and minimize the use of phytotoxic products, ensuring the production of healthier fruits and vegetables for everyone.
In this context, Miguel Jaén, manager of Community Affairs at the mining company, encouraged students from the Regional Center to continue their studies and delve into these modern techniques.
“For the past 12 years, at Cobre Panama, we have maintained a strong commitment to work throughout the educational cycle of people in our neighboring communities through a variety of programs that provide support from early childhood to university,” said the manager of Community Affairs. One example of this is our Comprehensive Schools program, which includes sustainable production components to ensure food supply in 70 educational centers, as well as offering scholarships for higher education to motivate young people to pursue university studies.
This initiative also supports the development and continuous innovation of the Technical Outreach Program for Producers in Coclé, led by the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA).
In addition to the generous donation of the cultivation house, Cobre Panama provided a warehouse equipped with supplies, materials, and tools, as well as an irrigation system and cucumber seeds that will be used to kickstart the activities of this greenhouse.
