Lost Highway Records Co-Heads Talk Leading the Revived Label: ‘Kacey Musgraves Is A North Star’

In the ever-evolving landscape of the music industry, it takes a special kind of vision and determination to not only survive, but thrive. For Jake Gear and Robert Knotts, co-founders of the iconic imprint Interscope, this has been their reality for over two decades. And now, in their first interview since relaunching the imprint under Interscope, they share their insights on how they honor the past while moving forward.

Interscope, originally founded in 1990, quickly became a powerhouse in the music industry, launching the careers of some of the biggest names in music such as Dr. Dre, Eminem, and Lady Gaga. However, after a series of changes in ownership and leadership, the imprint was put on hold in 2014. But now, with Gear and Knotts at the helm, Interscope is back and ready to make its mark once again.

When asked about their decision to relaunch Interscope, Gear and Knotts were quick to credit their passion for music and their unwavering belief in the imprint’s legacy. “Interscope has always been more than just a record label to us,” says Gear. “It’s a symbol of creativity, innovation, and pushing boundaries. We couldn’t let that die.”

But relaunching a label with such a rich history comes with its own set of challenges. How do you honor the past while still moving forward? For Gear and Knotts, the answer lies in striking a balance between nostalgia and innovation. “We have immense respect for the artists who have been a part of Interscope’s journey,” says Knotts. “We want to pay homage to that while also creating a space for new and emerging talent to thrive.”

One of the ways they are doing this is by bringing back some of the original team members who helped build Interscope’s success. “We have reunited with some of the key players who were there from the beginning,” says Gear. “Their experience and expertise are invaluable in maintaining the essence of Interscope while also bringing in fresh perspectives.”

But it’s not just about the team. Gear and Knotts also recognize the importance of staying true to the imprint’s core values. “Interscope has always been about taking risks and pushing boundaries,” says Knotts. “We want to continue that legacy by signing artists who are not afraid to be themselves and create music that is authentic and unique.”

And it seems their approach is already paying off. Interscope’s first release since its relaunch, “The Good Ones” by Gabby Barrett, has already reached number one on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. “It’s a great feeling to see our first release back on top,” says Gear. “It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team and the incredible talent we have on our roster.”

But Gear and Knotts are not content with just reliving past successes. They have their sights set on the future and are determined to make Interscope a leader in the industry once again. “We are constantly looking for ways to innovate and stay ahead of the curve,” says Knotts. “We want to be a label that artists are proud to be a part of and that fans can’t get enough of.”

As for what’s next for Interscope, Gear and Knotts are keeping their cards close to their chest. “We have some exciting projects in the works, but we don’t want to give too much away just yet,” says Gear with a smile. “All I can say is, stay tuned.”

In a world where the music industry is constantly changing, it’s refreshing to see two individuals who are determined to honor the past while moving forward. Gear and Knotts’ passion for music and their unwavering belief in Interscope’s legacy is what will drive the imprint to new heights. And with their innovative approach and talented team, there’s no doubt that Interscope will continue to make its mark in the industry for years to come.
