Claudia Sheinbaum, the virtual presidential candidate for Morena, reaffirmed her dedication to safeguarding wages and employment benefits, asserting that the prosperity of workers directly correlates with the well-being of Mexico.
Consequently, Sheinbaum urged the nation’s workers to rally behind her during her pre-campaign for the presidency, set to commence on November 20.
“More than just a party alliance, it is our unity with the people of Mexico that will propel us forward. (…) We cannot alter our course; the path is the Fourth Transformation,” she declared.
The Coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Fourth Transformation also pointed out the increase in the minimum wage in Mexico, which has seen improvements under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s leadership.
The Autonomous Confederation of Workers and Employees of Mexico (CATEM) voiced its support for Claudia Sheinbaum, committing to establish 10,000 Committees for the Defense of Labor Transformation to back her candidacy.
It is important to note that CATEM, under the leadership of Senator Pedro Haces Barba, includes over 1,194 union organizations spread across all 32 states of the country.
During the Ordinary National Congress of the organization held at Arena Ciudad de México, CATEM Secretary General Pedro Haces Barba pledged to uphold the continuity of the Fourth Transformation, emphasizing that Mexico stands at a crucial crossroads and stating that “Mexico is now spelled with an ‘M’ for woman,” in reference to his backing of Claudia Sheinbaum and her career.
“We are at a defining moment, which is why, from this Congress, together with Doctor Claudia Sheinbaum, we reaffirm our commitment to the principles of the Fourth Transformation,” he underscored.
Pedro Haces Barba recalled that, after the Labor Reform was passed, the old conflicts between employers were resolved, and through collective collaboration, a new unionism has emerged that champions workers’ rights while respecting their wages and benefits.
Additionally, the senator and CATEM leader expressed hope that next year, employers would be considerate of workers’ situations and provide a substantial wage increase.
“Dear employers, I make a respectful appeal. We expect that this year you will take the situation into account, Paco (Francisco Cervantes, president of the CCE), do not ignore it, and consider a meaningful wage increase for all Mexicans,” he stated.
He also emphasized the labor achievements attained during the current administration, such as granting freedom to unions through elections for leaders, abolishing outsourcing, increasing profit-sharing, and raising the minimum wage.
