Chicago Air & Water Show: How you can get a preview of this year’s performances

The Chicago Air & Water Show is just a few weeks away, and this year’s event is set to be even more exciting than ever before. With a change in date due to the city hosting the 2024 Democratic National Convention, the Air & Water Show will take place a week earlier than usual, on August 10-11. This highly anticipated event, known as the “largest free admission event of its kind,” will be headlined by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Army Parachute Team Golden Knights.

The Blue Angels, who did not perform at the show in 2023, are the oldest flight demonstration squadron in the U.S., having first flown in 1946. Their performances are known for their skilled maneuvers, tight formations, and precision flying, showcasing the capabilities of naval aviation.

But the excitement doesn’t just stop at the headlining acts. The full lineup for this year’s show, according to Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, is nothing short of impressive. It includes the U.S. Navy F-35C, the U.S. Marine Corps F-35B, the U.S. Air Force C-17, KC-135, KC-46 Pegasus, and B-1B, as well as the U.S. Army AH-64 and the U.S. Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin Search & Rescue.

For the first time ever, the Chicago Air & Water Show will also feature civilian stunt performers, including RJ Gritter Decathlon Aerobatics, the Trojan Phlyers T-28 (2-ship), Bill Stein Edge 540, Kevin Coleman Red Bull Aerobatic Pilot, Susan Dacy’s Big Red Stearman Biplane, and Ed “Hamster” Hamill’s Folds of Honor Biplane. These performers will add an extra level of excitement and entertainment to the already thrilling show.

But the fun doesn’t just start on August 10-11. Those in Chicago can get a sneak peek of the performances ahead of the show. On Friday, August 9, all of the show’s performers for Saturday and Sunday will fly the same show performed on the weekend, allotted as a rehearsal day. While there won’t be an announcer present for the rehearsal day, it will still be a great opportunity to see the performances before the official show.

Similar to the official show on Saturday and Sunday, performances are scheduled to last from approximately 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday. So make sure to mark your calendars and come out to see these incredible acts in action.

The Chicago Air & Water Show is not only a thrilling event for spectators, but it also holds a special significance for the city. It showcases the best of Chicago, from its beautiful lakefront to its rich history in aviation. It brings together people from all walks of life to celebrate and appreciate the incredible skill and bravery of these performers.

So get ready to be amazed and inspired by the incredible displays of aerial acrobatics and precision flying. The Chicago Air & Water Show is a truly unique and unforgettable experience that you won’t want to miss. And with free admission, there’s no reason not to come out and join in on the fun.

In addition to being a thrilling event, the Chicago Air & Water Show also supports a great cause. This year, the show will partner with the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides scholarships to the families of fallen and disabled military and first responders. Since 2007, Folds of Honor has given out 51,000 scholarships worth nearly $240 million. So not only will you be entertained, but you’ll also be supporting a worthy cause.
