At White House Tribal Nations Summit, USDA Fulfills Long-Standing Tribal Requests to Strengthen Food Sovereignty and Expand Indigenous Roles in Forest Management

USDA Announces Support for Tribal Nations in Empowering Food Sovereignty

Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack announced ways the Biden-Harris Administration is fulfilling long-standing Tribal requests for USDA to support and better partner with Tribal Nations in empowering Tribal food sovereignty and co-stewardship of federal lands and waters.

The announcement comes as part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to addressing the unique needs of Tribal Nations and to ensure that Tribal Nations have the resources and support they need to thrive.

The USDA is taking a number of steps to support Tribal Nations in their efforts to achieve food sovereignty. These steps include:

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Advisory Council to provide guidance and advice on how USDA can better support Tribal Nations in their efforts to achieve food sovereignty.

• Developing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Action Plan to identify and prioritize actions that USDA can take to support Tribal Nations in their efforts to achieve food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Fund to provide grants to Tribal Nations to support their efforts to achieve food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Technical Assistance Program to provide technical assistance to Tribal Nations in their efforts to achieve food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Research Program to support research on Tribal food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Education Program to provide educational resources to Tribal Nations on food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Outreach Program to provide outreach and engagement to Tribal Nations on food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Network to provide a platform for Tribal Nations to share best practices and resources on food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Leadership Program to provide leadership training and development to Tribal Nations on food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Policy Program to provide policy guidance and support to Tribal Nations on food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Monitoring Program to monitor and evaluate the progress of Tribal Nations in achieving food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Evaluation Program to evaluate the effectiveness of USDA’s efforts to support Tribal Nations in achieving food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Capacity Building Program to provide capacity building support to Tribal Nations in their efforts to achieve food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Innovation Program to support innovation and entrepreneurship in Tribal food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Collaboration Program to support collaboration between Tribal Nations and other stakeholders in achieving food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Advocacy Program to support Tribal Nations in advocating for food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Monitoring and Evaluation Program to monitor and evaluate the progress of Tribal Nations in achieving food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Data Program to collect and analyze data on Tribal food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Communications Program to provide communications support to Tribal Nations in their efforts to achieve food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Training Program to provide training and development to Tribal Nations in their efforts to achieve food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Outreach and Engagement Program to provide outreach and engagement to Tribal Nations on food sovereignty.

• Establishing a Tribal Food Sovereignty Awards Program to recognize and reward Tribal Nations for their efforts to achieve food sovereignty.

The USDA is also taking steps to support Tribal Nations in their efforts to co-steward federal lands and waters. These steps include:

• Establishing a Tribal Co-Stewardship Advisory Council to provide guidance and advice on how USDA can better support Tribal Nations in their efforts to co-steward federal lands and waters.
