Chicago is set to experience a gloomy few days of rain and falling temperatures, as summer-like temperatures move out of the city and cooler fall weather moves in. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Tuesday saw a heat record tied in Chicago, with 83 degrees recorded at O’Hare International Airport – the same temperature as recorded in 1963.
Though temperatures will remain mild for the rest of the week, they are predicted to drop as much as 30 degrees by the start of next week. The NBC 5 Storm Team has also forecast daily chances for rain and isolated thunderstorms over the next few days.
Overnight rain on Tuesday was widespread, with heavier rainfall in Grundy County and more moderate rain moving into Kankakee County early Wednesday morning. Scattered light rain showers are forecast to continue into Wednesday morning and potentially through the morning commute. By lunchtime, much of the rain will have moved out of the area, but clouds are expected to remain. Later in the evening, another round of showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected. Temperatures on Wednesday will remain mild, with a high of 68 degrees.
Thursday is set to see further rain showers in the northern counties during the morning, with more moderate rain forecast for later that afternoon. Isolated thunderstorms are also expected. Wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour are expected, and temperatures will peak at 72 degrees.
Over the weekend, chances for on-and-off showers and storms are predicted to continue. Friday will be the last warm day for a while, with a high of 74 degrees. By Saturday, temperatures will plunge to 55 degrees and hover in the 40s by Halloween.
Chicagoans should prepare for a few days of wild weather, but should also look forward to the arrival of fall and all that it brings. From changing leaves and cooler weather, to the potential for pumpkin patches and outdoor activities, the city is in for a treat.
