What does the Big Bang Theory entail?

Due to current limitations in technology, direct observation of the Big Bang’s inception is not possible. Instead, our understanding of the theory comes from mathematical models and formulas. Around 13.7 billion years ago, the entire universe was concentrated in a tiny, infinitely dense singularity. Suddenly, an explosive expansion called cosmic inflation occurred, rapidly expanding the universe faster than the speed of light. After a brief period of inflation, matter and radiation filled the universe during a process known as “reheating,” leading to the formation of particles, atoms, stars, galaxies, and everything we see today. The universe’s early moments were incredibly hot, with temperatures reaching around 10 billion degrees Fahrenheit. As the universe cooled, neutral atoms formed, allowing light to finally shine through about 380,000 years after the Big Bang. This light, known as the cosmic microwave background, is considered the afterglow of the Big Bang.

While the Big Bang Theory is widely accepted, there are some alternative explanations put forward by theorists, such as eternal inflation or an oscillating universe. The discovery of the cosmic microwave background was accidental, made by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson in 1965, and it provided strong evidence in support of the Big Bang Theory.
